    I'll have to check my instructions (I kept them!) at
    home, but I seem to recall that they advised against
    the use of soap (and also direct sunlight).

    That's just bad hygiene! Do they advise storing them in coffins and keeping them away from garlic?

    Blaireau is a scientist in the field of polymers. He has posted about the Shaptons using polymers as a binder for the abrasive. They are sensitive to light and temp changes and the like.

    The Topher, a forum member, had a 16k in the kitchen. He got a drop of something on it that ate into the surface. He is not sure what it was but said at the time that he thought it might have been dish soap.
