    Default lather on shapton

I used lather on a 1k shapton last night (Institut Karite lather if you care). It really helped keep a difficult edge vacumed to the hone.

I know its common to use lather on finishing stones. Anyone else use it on bevel setting stones?

My technique for twisted blades is to hold down the edge on the stone with three fingers equidistant along the edge and use my other arm to "piston" back and forth. Works well for me to have each limb focus on a different part of the process.

I bet you can tap your head with one hand and rub your tummy with the other at the same time too!

I try what you described as well, and it helps on my really annoying blade, but I'm probably not as good as you at keeping the pressure even across the blade and giving equal surface time to each part of the blade.

Now maybe Howard knows better here, but the info sheets that came with my Shapton's said specifically not to use soaps with the Shapton stones?????

On other stones especially like the DMT plates one drop of soap helps the glide....

I don't believe in reading instructions.

I'll have to check my instructions (I kept them!) at
home, but I seem to recall that they advised against
the use of soap (and also direct sunlight).

That's just bad hygiene! Do they advise storing them in coffins and keeping them away from garlic?
