Thanked: 488I actually sold my Nortons and went to Naniwas from SRD and I'm not sorry. They have a nice feel to them. I also have a DMT that is 325 on one side and 600 on the other for removing nicks in the blade edge etc.

Thanked: 317With the sale going on from jendeindustries, I can get the 1k, 4k, and 8k shapton glass for only $130, which is right in between the norton and naniwa.
With all the comments here, and the fact that Tom from jendeindustries is willing to work with me on payment, I'm going to go ahead and get the shapton, including the 16k. That will get me all the way from setting a bevel up to finishing using one system.
Thanks for the feedback.

I've owned and used every stone you mention. I also sold my Nortons for the Shaptons. I much prefer the Shapton 4k GS over the Norton 4k. The GS not needing soaking is a plus, but I find the Shapton 4k to cut like a 4k should but also it has a smoother feel to it.
Actually, I was always impressed by the Norton 8k side of the 4/8 combo stone. That stone has a very nice feel to it and was fun to use. But, the Shapton 8k is certainly the Norton 8k's equal.
Personally, between the two I would go for the Shaptons.

Thanked: 317For the VERY short term, I'll be using wet/dry paper on a granite tile. I'll be ordering a DMT for lapping as soon as I can. The DGLP sounds fantastic, but it just seems like a HUGE amount of money for a relatively small gain in honing performance.
My entire hone system will cost me less than the DGLP would. That just doesn't make sense.
On the other hand, I've got a lottery ticket in the glove box of my car that I haven't checked yet. If it's a winner I'll be "expanding my order" lol.

Thanked: 317On second thought, i went ahead and ordered a DMT8C for lapping them. I don't really have the extra dough, but it will be worth it in the long run. The DGLP on the other hand, is simply a luxury I can't justify.

Thanked: 317You know, I've finally discovered something more frustrating that trying to choose my first set of hones.
Waiting for them to show up.
I only paid for them over the weekend, so there's no way they could have shown up yet, but this waiting is killing me.
oh well.

Thanked: 317The gods of shipping and retail hate me.
My hone order showed up today, except that the 4k hone was on back-order, and the invoice gave no indication of when to expect it.
