Default holy cow - just ordered my first razor - now what?!

    Hello gentlemen
I have just ordered my first straight rzor and a Russian leather strop. I have noticed that many people here have Norton 4k/8k setup for sharpening. I currently use Shapton pro 1k/5k/15k and Handamerican leather hone for my knives.

    My questions are:

    1. Are my stones adequate for razor sharpening?
    2. What the heck do I do first when my stuff gets here? (Sharpen, strop, shave?) I bought a new Dovo btw.

    Thanks in advance.

    It depends.

What razor did you order and from where? If it's new, it could come to you pretty close, but not quite there. 10 - 20 laps on your pasted flatbed hone could do it. If it's used and belonged to a member,... your strop will take care of it. approximately 10 laps on linen and 25 laps on leather,...

You'll need to test it. I'm sure someone else is more familiar with your stones, but I certainly wouldn't start at the stone. I always go backwards. Strop,... nope? then pasted strop,... nope? then highest grit stone,... nope? then pyramid,.... which if you are at this point, you should invest 15 minutes in reading and studing the honing guide.

Thanks for the reply. It's a brand new Bergischer Lowe Dovo. I plan on getting a beater to practice on before I take this beauty to the stones. My 15k stone is approximately 1 micron. Sorry I have not read the sharpening guide as I did not see it. I probably should have searched a little better prior to posting.
