Default The dreaded diagonal pest on bevels

    Where does this come from?
I've seen this a lot of times now on the bevels of different razors.
    Diagonal crack lines, very uniform,
not always but sometimes leading to a microchip.

What can you do? Hone until gone?
    They appear again!
Is there a trick not to get them?

I am sure no expert with this, but I have seen it before on a few of the blades I have honed. I gave this some thought though, and think the scratch marks are caused by the tiny micro chip coming off during the stroke, and the hydraulic action of the water and the movement of the blade push that micro piece at a slight angle to the movement of the blade. The piece would be small enough that it would just look like the rest of the swarf, and would be pushed to the end of the stone on the next stroke back.
This is only my very humble opinion, so I will be looking forward to someone answering this who has more knowledge about it then me.

    Olivia,

Is this before or after sharpening?
If it's after, are you using natural or synthetic stones?

Well, I'm not Olivia but I have seen the same thing happen when honing. When I get to the higher grits (8K, 10K) these deeper scratches become visible. The weird thing is they go against the rest of the scratches, and there are only one or two. I have no idea if they are there at the lower levels and just not as visible in all the mess, or what.

These are only on synthetic hones (Naniwa Super 2K and 8K, King 4K).

Like Jim says, they appear when the bevel is about to get polished.
I've seen them both after honing on natural and on synthetic hones.
The direction of the stroke does not matter.
The pests have always the same angle.
I've only seen them on hollow grounds so far.
Sometimes from both sides, sometimes only on one side.
Don't think I've seen them on very old blades and never on wedges so far.

Are they something that can come with the manufacturing process?
    Tempering issues,forging or else maybe?

are we sure this isn't a bit of coarse grit just making a slice across a shiny bevel?

can we have a pic please?

Just tried to take a pic but failed.
    Will try again later.
