A very nice illustration that has implications for LAPPING too. If you want a nice smooth feeling hone light even pressure. Are you going to shave off that chalk??

This is one of those simple things that seems so obvious in retrospect. Very instructional, and I think it should be in the wiki.

Great demo pictures! I also like to think of smoothing modelling clay on various types of wooden combs that match varisous grit sizes, shapes and densities (sometimes with peas, beans, etc. in it if you need to model hard carbide grains too). Clay doesn't spring back but it does model the malleability of steel to some extent too.
