Gary it depends on the blade I am starting with. For awhile I was starting at 15 to 5 but since Lynn's tutorial in the Wiki I've had real good results with the 25 to 25 start and then following it just as it is in the Wiki here.
When I did the alternative aggressive pyramid found here I found that a lot of the time I had to repeat it anyway so in many cases I just go to the more intensive one Lynn posted to begin instead. Of course if the edge is pretty good to start with I would opt for a more conservative pyramid.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 2591I already explained.
also I am not saying use 2 stones and that's it, please read careful.
the difference between 1 and 2k is small enough to allow to skip to higher grit. the difference between higher grits is even smaller. 4-6-8k for example is 1 store more than what will work equally well with 4/8k only. I see you are sticking by the x2 grit progression rule, and that's fine, in my experience other progressions work just as well.
I stated that I use 1,3,5,8,10k which obviously is not 1,10k .. I also think that in my progression the 5k is extra, but I'll have to find a razor to hone to test that.
I was not trying to say your progression is wrong or anything you can obviously use w/e progression you like as long as it works for you.Stefan

Thanked: 286So once bevel is set you would go 25/25 15/15 10/10 and so on 5/5 1/5 1/5 aprox . on my norton i lways found 50 light strokes on 4k then 15 on 8k after bevel setting worked fine . with naiwas i did same process using 5k n 8k naniwa and my razor was'nt sharp enough and i had to go back. I just used 3k 5k naniwa and it worked the shave of 5k was good under my 30k loop the edge looks mint like its been polished on finer stone i wonder if any one else noticed this. After 8k naniwa do you use the 12k jimmy. i do think the 3k is more closer to 4k i wonder if any one else as noticed this if they have 4k to compare norton that is.

there is a differences what you do and what you do advice to new person to do.
Experienced person knows what is he doing. you can jump from 4k to 10k as long as you have enough time to waste and understand that progression will take time.
Now for new Person is different. he just starts and doesn't know how long and how much pressure etc he needs to use to get where blade should be.
That is why i said Depends on money and close grit stones(which means basically more close grit stones) will make him to make less mistakes.
I couldn't understand your comment
[COLOR="Red"]The more stones you use the bigger chance to mess up the edge
Explanation which ends up same idea?
The more stones you use for those the bigger chance of screwing up the angle and the edge.
Doesn't matter number of stones you use if your strokes is not right you will screw up the angle.
Lastly
i don't use any Grit progression when i sharp razors. i use only natural stones except 1k norton to set bevel. Hope i was clear enough.Last edited by hi_bud_gl; 09-23-2009 at 07:23 PM.

Thanked: 2591For those razors that are to be honed at an angle to the stone not flat on the stone (similar to how you sharpen a knife) you have higher chance to screw up the edge when using more stones than when you use less. Unless you can keep the same angle all the time with every stone. That was my point.
