    hi guys, should the spine touche the stone when honing???

    generally yes.
    You can also tape it to prevent wear.

    but wouldn't residue from the tape stick to the stone???

    We all have to start somewhere so it is not a stupid question but it indicates that you need to do a bit of homework before you start actually honing. The SRP Wiki honing section noted by radaddict is the place to start and check out the videos of Lynn and heavydutystg137.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    I use electric tape and no residue on the stones
