Default Best grit for lapping Norton 4k/8k?

I need to lap my Norton 4k/8k stone and I am wondering what kind of sandpaper, and what grit size to use when lapping it.

Also, Do i need to lap the 8000 side? If so, do I need to use a different git size? Lastly, if the same grit size is acceptable for both the 4000, and 8000 side, will it hurt to use the same piece of sand paper that has been used on the previous side, since it will have some of the opposing grit contaminating the sandpaper

    Thanks!

I'm confused. So do you recommend choosing any ONE between 320 and 1000 and that one grit will work for lapping, or do work your way up the grits starting at 320, and ending up at 1000?

What do you mean by " i never go until 1K, i stop on 600"?

    sorry for my confusion

He's saying to work your way up the grits, and that he stops his progression on the 600 grit paper, that he doesn't go up to 1000. I think you can start on a lower grit paper, personally, just make sure you refine your surface with a progression. I wouldn't have a problem with using 120 grit paper for the initial lapping on a norton. You shouldn't need to go that low when lapping the stone later, though (after you've been using it).

The instruction sheet that came with mine said to use 600 grit wet/dry. That's what I always used and had good success with it. Soak the stone for 15-20 mins before doing this (as with everything else with the Norton). You don't need coarser grit because once you start lapping the grit coming off the norton really speeds things up, and you don't need finer grit sandpaper because pretty quickly almost all the work is being done by the norton's own abrasives.

If you haven't seen this in the wiki, you might find it useful.

A 1200 grit DMT diamond plate. That is all you need for lapping a Norton.
