Welcome to SRP. Have you already done some reading in the honing section of the SRP Wiki here and watched any of the honing videos ?
When you say cheap ebay razors, are they old Solingen, Sheffield or USA razors or are they from Pakistan or India ?
Cheap isn't necessarily bad but there are brands listed in the Wiki to avoid here.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm finding honing isn't the easiest task I've attempted in my life. After about about half a dozen tries I'm able to get a razor to the point it will shave comfortably but definitely not as sharp as I know they could be. Be prepared to take several stabs at it before you start having some success.
What hones are you using and what steps are you taking? That might help the experts help you.
Oh, welcome to SRP.

Thanked: 234there is no mystery in honing. What stones have you got, what razors have you got?
If either were new and cheap, there's your problem!

Being you got it from ebay, I would venture to say it is a Zeepk Straight Razor. I made the same mistake when I wanted to start shaving with a Straight. I went out and bought one thinking I got a deal but found out real quick I just wasted my money. At least you are not using them to shave with. I tell you what, if you are willing to take a chance you can send me your good razors and I will hone them for you for free. If you want to, just PM me and I'll give you my info. Take care and God Bless!

I think there are two things you want to work on when practicing to hone. The first is to get an even pressure stroke on the hone, ensuring the razor stays flat on the hone. The second is a really light touch at the right stage to get the sharpest edge. The more important thing to work on is the first one... as this is where you could mess up the edge on your good razor. I think you could still use a pakistan razor for this part...
Once you can get a nice even bevel with a confident stroke, then you can focus on the light touch-- and you can use your "real" razor for that without worry.
