Am I understanding you right that the Aoto cuts like a 1k, but gives a finish like a 5k?

This is one of the stones I'm going to pick up, but love to know more

Also, how hard/soft is it? Wonder how often it will need lapping

Nice stones, but they look in need of some lapping.

I tried to use my Chinese 12k not soaked and did not get good results at all, for whatever reason I thought that nat stones do not need soaking

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter if you soak it or not. The stone is not porous, and members who have cut them up reported that water does not penetrate the stone. I've never soaked mine, and I've gotten great edges off it.

Did you put ANY water on it? Cause you still have to put a little water on it, but you don't have to let it soak.

just put a little on it, rub it to coat the stone, and hone. doesn't need a lot of water, but you need SOME.

I also have an Aoto, I use it after my Amakusa Red and I would say it is probably the softest feeling stone I have. It makes a muddy slurry after only a few passes and gives me an edge somewhere in the 1K to 4K range.....it's hard to judge the grit, but with the heavy slurry the edge is very similar to the King1200, and when I rinse it regularly it's closer to the 4K Norton.

I like the Aoto, even after only a month or so, it's already become a favorite.
