    Default Question about Norton 4000/8000

I'm confused. Do these stones have to be lapped (flattened) before each sharpening session?

Not necessarily before each and every session. They should be flattened before the first go round and then as needed which depends on how much honing you do on them. A straight edge is one way of checking. More info here.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Are they really that bad off that they need flattening straight from the factory?

IME all hones need lapping straight from the factory.

Huh, ok. Do you also round the corners/edges a bit to prevent them digging into the blade?
