I would say that a 10k+ range stone would be fine for what you need. If its bad from the pastes you might just need more strokes. However, I like having the full range of stones. If you like a straight enough to stick with it for 10 months why not buy the 5k,8k and 12k setup?? Youve earned it!

time for my 2 cents were i you i would go for the norton 4000 8000 . you can shave off the 8000 without problem. its the workhorse that gets the job done and ill bet that 90% of the people who hone there own razors have them. after that well 12,000s are just fine . but if getting you razor shaveing again is the goal.look no further

A coticule will be very versatile with slurry you could get a nice flat bevel again with mild slurry you could refine and polish with water and continue to refresh on water with your coticule plus paste one hone that can do it all.

Well... I'll differ by not suggesting the quite "exotic" stones listed in the thread. If you're starting out, I think you can't go wrong with the classic Norton 4k/8k to get an edge back... then, if you don't mind throwing a bit more to get an higher grit polishing stone... the "chinese 12k" is the best value there is. They don't get talked about much here anymore. These 2 (well... 3) stones will cost you maybe 10-15$ more than a single nani 12k will.

Also, I recently discovered the DMT goodness, in the D8EE... "cuts like a 4k, polishes like a 8k" holds true. It has quite a few advantages over the Norton... no lapping, no soaking, no pyramid honing.

For a bit more, a two sided BBW/coticule is a very good buy too and will/may give you the smoothest edge over all of these, depending on which ones you will find.

We are all getting so technical on here with these stones but I love that about this site we can cater for the basics and pull out the rocket science when needed lol.

Chinese 12K are super for the price.
