    Default DMT D8E 1.2k + D8EE 8k impressions!

Just got them yesterday from Howard@theperfectedge (Who has been really nice dealing with, and has the best prices around), and I'm definitely glad I chose to try them out and not stick to the "standards" for the sake of it. I got the the D8E and D8EE yesterday
and tried them on a Wapi that had a 1-2mm chip on the edge at the heel.

All the "time lapses" are VERY approximate, and I don't count the number of passes. Took about 15 minutes on the D8E to remove the chip and set the bevel. Then maybe 15 minutes on the D8EE and I had quite a straight edge without much micro chipping at 30x magnification. Then did maybe 20 minutes on the C12k with slurry, no slurry and then dry... off to the CrO strop + strop on my TM 3" latigo... etc etc etc...

Result: Good shave! In a lot less time than my Nortons ever took me... :P

I'm thinking of maybe adding a coticule to my "arsenal" because it wasn't
as smooth (like... 5% less smooth.) as my DA off of the Norton 8k but I think that may be due to not having honed out the chip completely, since I only have a 30x loupe. But I don't think a lot of people like shaving off of the Norton 8k either - I personally don't and never really cared for it. I'll hone another wapi and post my impressions.

The 12k did it's job well and not that slowly.

All in all, a very good buy, and worthy of replacing the sacred Nortons! The D8EE really does remove metal like the 4k and polishes like the 8k.

Also, no lapping and no soaking is a godsend. I'm NOT going back to waterstones! The only awkward thing about them is the feel and look, at first, but spray on some water and/or soap and you forget about it quickly.

Thanks to the 4-5 people I asked info about the DMTs on the forum and to Howard! I can now attest that they're in fact very good and the "jagged diamond edges" can be easily and in no time be honed away on any polishing stone.

Dmt's has been discussed in SRP a lot . if you check archive you will find a lot information.
i should say i couldn't find word in your message which you have break in before using it?
May be that is the problem you have .
They all need to break in before use or you will have a lot small chips on your edge.
    hope this helps.

Well, they have been discussed in both SRP and B&B... I read ALL the posts about them and couldn't really find an in-depth review of these two stones, apart from Joel's @ B&B. I'll post in a review of both, w/ pictures, here when I'm done honing more razors on them.

Also, I can't really say I have a problem with them, I'm pretty sure it's just remnants of a chipped edge. I broke in both stones with soapy water and a screwdriver shaft... went well.

I'm just posting to say how much I love them. They are a great alternative to the sacred cows without most of their drawbacks and with added advantages.

I have the 8k, and have no complaints about it. Makes honing pretty simple. Once the bevel is set you just hone until its sharp. My first set up was the Chinese 12k after the DMT 8k. Uhhhhh.....Good luck! It takes so much more time because the 12k is a really slow cutter after the hard scratches of the diamonds. It will work dont get me wrong, but you need to make sure you get rid of all the DMT marks before you finish up with the 12k. Just my 2 cents. Ive changed over to Shapton Glass Hones just to have a single system.

I wonder how the 8k would be for my chefs knives.

Actually, only 20 minutes of moderately slow passes at most on the WAPI, on the Chinese stone repartitioned between 1) w/ slurry, 2) without and 3) dry and I was golden. I guess I'm one of the lucky few to have a "fast" C12k.

Yes. Don't lap your stones on these! I was talking about the edge of a badly-ground from the factory wapi razor, not lapping my C12k on either.

    ,

I guess everything is relative. The main thing is that you are enjoying the result, and it sounds like you are happy. Take this for what it is worth, but there are very few stones I would every want to get rid of. It might come to pass where the Norton is the right tool for the job. I have found that metal and design of razors so diverse, I like to have different progressions. Sometimes if I use the DMT EE I will take a few strokes on the Nortons after before going on to finer stones to blend some of the deeper scratches so finishing goes super fast and effortless afterward. DMTs are pretty awesome for sure.

The 8k (after a few laps on the 1200) is _awesome_ for my chefs knives.
