    Default Cracked Arkansas

    Hallo All,
    I got white hard arkansas with two linear cracks.
    Is it possible to lap it and use as a razor sharpener or for finishing of knife edges only?

    That is a very beautiful, vintage translucent! Imo, given that the crack-lines are vertical and with proper lapping to minimize them, you could still finish straights, with that stone.
    I have one similar and after extensive lapping the cracks can not be felt by touch at all...common sense, on your part, will have to ultimately determine its uses, however.

    INdeed very nice stone. Just be careful when you lap and use it always in it's box. You should be ok.

    Welcome to SRP. That is indeed a beautiful stone. You'll feel it if the cracks are an issue through the blade when you hone. Most likely it will be fine.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    I have a soft Arkansas hone that developed a crack the length of the hone when it was less than a year old. I figured it was trash or maybe at best good for knives only. Just to see if it could be used for razors again I filled in the crack with 2 ton epoxy, let it sit and cure for over a week then lapped it. I figured that since you can sand epoxy it would also wear as you honed. It seems to be usable again but I make sure I swap ends quite often. Have not noticed any ill effects to any razors yet. Of course I use a finer grit hone after the Arkansas...........

    I like the signatures and dates on the top of the box. I guess the second line above the 1951 date is a location, I cant really read it.
