    Default Newb Hone Choice

    Hello All,

I would like to get your thoughts on a set a stones to start with. I have read a lot about the Norton being good for beginner. My question is if a beginner could learn on either the Naniwa or Shapton set? REason would be that I more than likely will not be buying several different sets of stones and would like a set that I could grow with.

    Thanks

    Lu

Based on your desire to build a set of stones (ie; more than just the basics) I think that you would be better off to go with Naniwas or Shaptons. Either line has a more comprehensive range of stones than Norton and these stones have earned a strong following with a lot of the guys we consider to be the honing experts. That translates into lots of good advice based on their experience, which can be invaluable for someone new to honing.

    I agree with Bill S.
if you don't have any money issues then go head and have Naniwa's or shapton's complete set.
will be a lot easier to learn hone the blade.
    hope this helps. GL

    Thank you guys,

I had been considering the Shapton set more than any other as I can always get the 30K latter, but was a a bit concerned that this would be an advanced ability set.

Would the 1k,2k,4k,8k,16K be sufficient or should I add another stone?

I'd skip the 2k, though... not critical to good results and less odds of screwing up the edge.

That is an excellent choice for a honing kit. If you can go ahead and get the 2K with that set. I really like the 2K and you won't screw up the edge with the Shaptons. You can decide later if you want to go for the 30K. Don't forget the lapping system. The DMT8C will work but the Shapton DGLP is much nicer if you can pop for one of those. [It's so easy to spend other people's money]. Also consider the Shapton holder as it is also a fine product.

The naniwa's and shaptons are quite expensive though. Someone here told me: buy a coticule and you have all you need (for honing)

Often your location will be a determining factor in the price you pay for your hones. Certainly someone based in Europe will find a coticule to be a more viable option than hones that would have to be imported from outside of Europe and vice-versa.

Danny the prices for Naniwas just dropped quite a bit in europe lately. (link)
I love them ... and even more than my Shapton Pro's
