    Default Sand or something

I have noticed that sometimes when I am honing a razor. all of a sudden there is a grinding sound as if a piece of sand is under the razor. If I stop and wipe the razor and the stone it stops ,but if I keep honing it makes a scraping sound as if there is a large peice of grit or metal shaving on the stone. I can't see anything but it goes away when I clean both. Has anyone else noticed this? Mack

Usually it turns out to be a hair or bit of dust.

+ to what IanS said. It makes a terrible sound doesn't it? Makes my teeth itch! I was doing some honing today and yesterday and had the same problem. I try to make sure my hone is clean when I start but still get some crap on it from somewhere. I keep the container I soak my hone in handy and usually just give the hone a quick dunk and keep going.

If you hear that "scratching" noise, stop what you're doing, thoroughly rinse the blade and hone off and resume.

Might be a piece of residual grit from the previous hone, and could also be a hair (but I never had the hair make a noise like that, although I could feel it very easily.)

You do want to get rid of it as soon as you can though. May end up scratching your high grit hone and could possibly affect the edge.

Yeah, it's usually hair or dirt. Are you going from a lower grit stone to a higher without rinsing the razor? I assume you're rinsing, but that would explain it too.

Son of a gun ! You are right. I have been wiping the stone and razor. It is not convenient to go the the sink but you can bet I will from now on. I will rinse both the next stone and the razor. Thank you Mack
