I have a Radio Shack special as well. It's tricky, but I got the hang of it fairly quickly. I use it to watch when I'm honing aggressively to remove nicks, etc. After I get it where I want it, and verified with the scope, I put it away again. It is very helpful as mentioned above for seeing what is happening with an edge. I'd like to have one of the nicer USB models so I could snap pictures, but not enough to drop the $$$ on one......yet. YET being the operative word here. I too use the radio shack for following the repair of an edge. For quicker inspection, I use a 10x hand lens. But one of these days, a USB scope will probably find its way onto a birthday/anniversary/Christmas wish list . I'm sure I'll never be able to rationalise buying it for myself, but I'm not above asking a relative to buy it for me.
