    Thanks everyone. Great advice. I'll keep it in mind and even break down and spend a whole dollar on a sharpie.

    I used a permanent marker to look at the edge for honing, but it won't come off even with alcohol. It's a "marks a lot", does anyone know how I can remove this? Is toothepaste OK.

    Ronson lighter fluid works well for me. I always remove it immediately after seeing that the stroke is working. Early on I would leave it and continue sharpening. I don't like to wait until the razor is sharp to have to remove it. IMO the sooner the better.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Another option for cleaning many stains from metals is Hoppe's No. 9 gun cleaner. It's amazing what it will do for not only stains but sticky residue from tags or labels.
