X-man, I think the first item is a penis enlarger and the second is for erotic asphyxiation, IMHO.

The first is a blade aligner for those who don't know how to strop correctly. I have no idea what the second thing is.

Thanked: 0The second item is for sharpening double edge razor blades. The blade is placed in the lower section, over two pegs. The pegs are off center on rotating spindles. The contraption is closed and the string is pulled back and forth to rotate the spindles thus moving the blade against the hone on both sides.

Interesting. I don't know if I'd ever bother to sharpen a double edged blade, of course, but it's neat to see all the various shaving gadgets that people once thought up.
We need a 21st Century Equivalent. Some sort of honing robot. For those of us who don't like to hone, that is. I know some of you would never give it up. (Or would always insist you could get a keener edge! )

The two biggest differences in DE blades from then and now is quality of steel and thickness.
Todays blades are not meant to be resharpened, there for they can use a lesser quality (read:cheaper) steel. The blades are sharpened by means of a lazer, which produces an incredible edge but one could never recreate that edge by hand.
Depending on the steel, it might just work well enough to get a couple more shaves out of a blade.. you'll have to run the test for us
