How long does it take
I was wondering, from start to finish, how long does it take to hone a razor?

Thanked: 1262As long as it takes.
Every razor is different. Hell it can take longer to set a bevel on some razors than it take from start to finish on a differerent razor.
Plus skill is a factor also.

typically between 10 minutes and 100 hours (the later is an estimate for a razor i spend 25 hours honing before giving up).

(+1) Every razor is different and there are those that never get to that place where you think every razor should be. Some razors just turn out to be better shavers than others.

a lot depends on how dull it is - and of course on your skill and tools. but if the razor has been sharp and just needs to be refreshed, only a couple of minutes. if it has been sitting in an attic for 75 years and getting boinked from time to time, it still would probably only take 10-15 minutes when you know what you're doing, but could take a couple of hours. ouside of that you're talking very unusual cases, I would say.

The one answer that is correct for most honing questions .... it depends.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Yep, it depends. I can touch up a Lynn-honed Dovo in about 10 strokes on the 8k. I've also been fussing with a Frederick Reynolds on and off for about a month.

You could say how long from bevel to finished, but it's getting to the bevel that's tricky.
