Thread: Naniwa 2k for setting bevel?

I think the 2/5 combo ought to be a good stone to have. The 2 ought to be good for bevel setting. I can tell you that the 5k is very good from personal experience. I use a 1k to set the bevel but a 2k isn't that far from it. I've read that the DMT 8000 is more like a 4k but I don't know if there is anything to that.

That stone is what I am using for setting bevels.
I currently use the Naniwa SS 2K-5K-8K-12K and I am super happy with the way these stones perform.
In addition I have also purchased the 220grit lapping stone from the same company.

Thanks! I guess my biggest concern was that the 2k might be a too slow of a cutter, since I hear a lot about 1k shaptons and naniwa's. But I guess a few extra laps will be all there's to it.

My coarse DMT should do for lapping the naniwa's, right?

The DMT is fine for lapping naniwas . The company recommends the X, XX or C for lapping waterstones. Any finer and it may ruin the plate.

I think the 2/5 combo must be a good match or they wouldn't have put those together.

Is there a limit/reccomendation as to how high of a grit stone one can lap with the DMT XX (120 grit) plate?

I got mine on the recommendation of ChrisL and Utopian. They said it was good for barber hones and so it is. I have lapped Washita and hard arkansas oilstones with it as well as many waterstones.

What I do is start with the XX on a stone that needs flattening and wipe the pencil grid off or nearly off and then do some on the 325 (DMTC) and get a smoother surface. The XX does the lion's share of the work and faster than the 325 would.

I'll bet that the 2k will work just fine for bevel setting,
especially if you employ a technique such as circles.

I just got the same set (Naniwa SS 2k-5k-8k-12k) and a DMT Duo Sharp 325/220 coarse/extra coarse grit for lapping. This is my first honing equipment ever, and I'm stoked!
I've been around the honing wiki here and checked out some of Lynn's videos, but I wonder if you have any tips or advice about this setup in particular before I get started.

Congrats on some fine hones. They will serve you well for years to come.

A couple things from my experience with them:

Lap them properly the first time. Do a pencil grid and lap under running water until gone. Then repeat
On your every day use of them after the initial lapping, make sure to give them a couple figure eights every time before honing.
But let them get as soaked as they are during honing before doing so.

If you do this routine, you will avoid, more or less, the stones tendency to load up and warp, and you will have a flat and fresh surface to hone on.

Since I always did a few figure eights just prior to honing on them, I never did any more than a rinse after the honing sessions.

I have always used a DMT 325 to lap and clean the hones surfaces. That has worked out perfectly.

Other than that, these hones are easy enough to learn honing on, with good feedback and great honing capabilities.
