Thread: honing clipper blades

I guess this one would be more for the barbers on the forum.

Has anybody here honed their clipper blades, what stones do you use and can you polish them too much?

I have not yet honed my clipper blades, but I don't think you would need to take them to a very high grit. Just guessing here, but maybe 1k max.

I would do them FLAT, and run them back and forth, but once again, I don't have any experience doing it yet. I have an old set that I can try it on, and I will do so probably tomorrow, and I will report back my findings then.

Maybe another barber or just adventurous person will chime in to offer some kind words of advice

I maybe wrong here (and probably am) however I always thought clipper blades were considered to be disposable and when they wore out you just got new ones. Or at least when I used to go to barbers years ago I remember them just swapping them out.

Depends on the blade but they need to be flat and
matched to each other. Consider abrasive film
on something very flat.

I've honed mine using a 1200 grit stone and it worked fine. Just make sure to keep the blade flat on the stone.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. Been kinda busy :P

Anyway, I Haven't given them a full run through, but I did take my clipper blades across a D8C lapped barber's hone to remove a slight burr that was causing some buzzing and it worked excellent!

I will take my old clippers soon and sharpen the blades with a few different hones and will post the results
