Thanked: 43I did it!
Ok, to the sage straight shavers and hone-meisters out there this story will bring a big yawn.
But, today I used the Super Punjab hone, I spent hours lapping, and successfully put a good shaving edge on my razor.
I've my C-Mon out twice to be honed to KenRup so it's not like I set the bevel or anything. But, it was with much satisfaction that today I got a good shave with it.
It also took me three tries to get the edge to this point. Honing and shaving, honing and shaving. Today it was there.
I also saw I put too much pressure on the tip and now I have a slight smile on the bevel at the point. Some on the stroke toward me and more on the stroke away. I know when I did it too, I was afraid I wasn't keep it perfectly flat and over compensated. It's not that bad, but something to correct next time.
I'm pretty happy about it.

Thanked: 132Congrats joscobo...i'll not admit to the honing flubs i experienced, he, he...needless to say, the end result is what counts. You've achieved a decent shaving edge; you nearly there.

Congrats ! You have passed a major milestone , and will never have to send your razors out to be honed , again . I've been honing my own razors for over 3 years , and I've restored around 15 , and I only had one that gave me a good shave on the first try . I still have to usually re-hone 2 or 3 times before I have the edge I want . Once , you have a good shaving edge , all you will need to do in the future is touch up honing . I always touch up my razors at the first signs that they could be sharper . I don't wait until the shave is really rough . All that is needed is 5 strokes on a finish hone , and you're good to go . For me , the hardest thing about honing a razor was keeping the blade perfectly flat on the hone , while using almost no pressure on the blade , which is necessary to achieve a good sharp edge . I found the best way to practice this , is to restore the edges on old razors . Happy honing ! You did it once , and you can do it again !
Greetings , from Dundalk , Maryland . The place where normal people , fear to go .

Thanked: 33Hi joscobo,
That's a great achievement-honing your first razor to shave standard. You will improve your technique as you become more experienced. It's a skill once mastered-never forgotten.
Congrats!

Congratulations! That is a big milestone. Now that you have gotten the basics down, the learning curve will happen much faster for you. Just keep experimenting and practicing. Next milestone is the "OMG I can't believe I got it this sharp!" moment when your whiskers smoothly melt away without any pulling or irritation, and the blade makes a subdued crunching sound like buttering toast. I don't know what the next step after that is, because I haven't arrived there yet. Anybody else want to comment?
