Start with three layers, let us say, to set the bevel. It's set, then you remove two layers leaving one layer of tape, then finish honing. Is this correct?
In my mind this accomplishes jack squat because you're decreasing the angle of the bevel, making the hone hit "shallower" and therefor polishing only the shoulder of the bevel. If anything one might choose to increase the layers of tape: start with one, get the sides meeting and the bevel set, then add tape to increase the angle which thereby the hone hits the bevel narrower, closer to the edge.
I might be wrong about this, please correct and inform me if am.

Decreasing the number of layers is useless

hope it's okay to post in this thread. I just bought a wedge off the classifieds. So if I'm just doing maintenance honing on like a barber's hone (not full-blown sharpening, to which I will leave it to the honemeisters (did I spell that right?)), do I still put a bit of tape on the spine and give it a few strokes as I think I would with a half hollow or other shape of blade?

The best thing to do is to ask the person you bought it from if they used tape when they honed it and if so, how many layers. Follow their procedure for refreshing on your barber hone. You needn't bother with tape when stropping the razor even if it was used in the honing.

Try to contact to seller ask him how much tape he used. i am sure he will be able to guide you.
in General strop will cover approximately 2-3 layers of tape(let me explain this. if blade honed 2 or 3 layers electric tape by bending strop will sharpen the edge more then that it will start to dull of course this will depends original used tapes thickness etc). more then that you will need to put layers of tape.

if you are perfectionist then if your blade sharpened with 2 layers of tape go head put up 2 layers of tape and strop.
in honing you must put exact amount of tape and thickness you need to match to original honing thickness.
