    Default Honing a NEW Dovo

My current straight came shave ready from SRD, no my great aunt got me a new Dovo in Germany (bless her heart). What do I need to do to get it "Shave Ready"?

I searched the forum and could not find information on this topic, I am a newbie and I only have a strop (SRD IV) and a vintage "perfection" razor hone.

Your help and comments are aprecciated

If someone made a present of a new Dovo to me from Germany and I didn't have experience honing I would strop it and try shaving with it. If it shaves well you're in good shape, if it doesn't shave well you can send it to a honemiester or look into buying hones and learning to sharpen your own razors. A good place to start in looking at getting into hones and honing is here in the SRP Wiki.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

+1 on strop it up and shave test it first....

If it does need a touch up use lather and
a very light strokes give it 4 to six laps (no more)
on your ""vintage "perfection" razor hone"" then
canvas strop then leather strop and shave test again.

If it still needs a bit more then again four to six laps,
on your hone followed by canvas, leather shave test.

If this does not seem to make any progress send it
to a honemiester so the bevel gets correctly set.

A razor with a good bevel will touch up with relative "ease".
If the bevel is not well set a touch up/ barber hone
    will not make progress.

The Bevel on a new Dovo should be set well out of the box so it just needs sharpening a little. I would go to a 4k Norton for a few stokes and then go to the 8k side, the edge should improve. I then would use my 12K and move to Escher or Thuringian.

If I wasnt' experienced, I would send it to Lynn.

Belicoso. The tools you have may well be enough or they may not.
However ~ Can you assess if the bevel is set or what a shave ready razor feels like. ?
If not, best choice is to send it to someone for honing.

I agree with what others have recommended and send it out for honing. I too had a new Dovo as my first razor and it did shave ok when just stropped and then I got my hones and with alot of patience and persistence I realized it wasn't truly shave ready when I got it. Not saying I'm any honemiester and maybe I still don't know what a truly shave ready razor is like but I made it better..lol. I still want to send one of mine to Lynn for the "true experience" and that's why I recommend sending yours out That's my 2 bits and now I'll be quiet..lol

    Thank you for your responses...

I do have a "shave ready Dovo" I bought from Lynn as a reference, I will try the strop and hone and if that does not work... off to Lynn.

I am just happy that my great aunt took the time to go and buy it for me... she is old and those things can be complicated.
