First I should have asked if there are any pitted areas on the razor? I can't tell from the pics. If there is, even lightly pitted, you should remove the corroded metal and/or rust with a good polishing compound. For heavier pitting I've used 0000 steel wool. If there isn't any pitting or visible rust, then the patina should be OK. Just give it a light coat of camellia oil every so often.

it's quite possible that it will never shave very good. this thing is old and that means pretty bad steel and heat treatment technology. yes, some razors can be that old and older and still shave fantastically, but that's not even close to a rule.

from your pictures it looks to me you may be lacking on the bevel setting stage - that black dot on the edge shouldn't be there. Using some magnification will be helpful to determine if you're sharpening good steel.

Bring it to the meet next weekend and we'll have a look at it. Wear a beard or at least some stubble to shave off after we have a go at it.

I went back to the 1k, re-markered and went back to work. All is good except that area near the heel. That black spot is a pit and yes, a nick in the bevel. As it happens, I don't shave that far down anyway. I got a very nice shave today!
