Thanked: 0First Time Honing
Hey Everyone,
I've been shaving with my DOVO Black Star for about two months now. Its beginning to get a little dull and somewhat painful on some shaves (pulling/ tugging on the hair). I'm newer to the Straight Razor world so I am sure part of it is my poor stropping technique but I nonetheless I think it's time for her first honing. I rather not do it myself because I'm scared of ruining my nice razor so my question is... Does anyone here know of a proven honing service near the Los Angeles area and where I can find a cheaper/ good quality razor as a back up? I figure I could learn to hone on my cheaper razor once I get one rather than my nice DOVO.
Thanks!

IMO your best bet is to send your razor to a honmeister who you can find in 'member services' in the SRP classifieds here. For a back up razor one from a member in the classifieds listed as shave ready is a good way to go. You may find decent condition razors locally in antique shops or flea markets but that is a crap shoot and it helps to know what to look for in terms of condition and brands.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

+1 on what Jimmy says, you have access to the best honemeisters in the world right here. I don't think any brick & mortar shop sees anywhere near the volume of razors that these gentlemen do. I have had nothing but sucess with all my classified purchases. Don't be afraid of the mailbox!

You can also look in the Community link at the Member Map to see who is near you. You may be lucky enough to have someone close that can help you along It's also fun to go on road trips searching for razors

When in doubt....send it out!
I dulled my razors big time on the strop when I started, I didn't even realize it. Good thing is you seem to already see this may be the issue.
