    Default Another question

How do you fix an uneven bevel? I have a 1000 grit stone and I was told that this is a good stone to use. My straight razor is very sharp when testing using your thumb, but when I went to shave it hardly cut any of the hair, even though it cut the hair on my arm with relatively ease. Now earlier today I went back to the 1000 and did some strokes just on one side of the blade and not the other. I then got the edge sharp again and im hoping it works this Monday.

Your going to have to progress throught some more hones. As you have found out shaving off of the 1000 isn't pleasant. You'll need other hones in the 4000 to 8000 range and maybe even some finer finishers or pastes.

I'm sure some more experienced members will help out with more posts.

How exactly is it uneven? Pictures always help.

As stated, you'll probably get it to cut hair at the 1k level, but you certainly will not like the results.

You need, again as stated, something along the 4k, and 8k level before you will get a decent shaving edge on it.

Post pics...we can help better that way.

An edge won't always be perfectly symmetrical from one side to the other or even from one end to the other. If it is that is fine but they aren't all perfect. The good news is that if you have a bevel on both sides you can sharpen it, finish it to smooth it out and shave with it regardless. That said pictures would help and trying to do an equal amount of strokes from one side to the other is also good. If you are trying to correct something specific you might do more on one side than the other but that is only for certain situations. What stones are you using ?
