Thanked: 13249A little honing / shaving fun
Last week or so my friend and yours RayG sent me 4 matched razors to hone for him... But Ray decided it would be fun to have me hone each one different...
These were 4 Mappin & Webb Celebrated Hollow Ground Razors
So here is what I did,
First you have to understand Ray does NOT know which razor is which I sent them wrapped and numbered but never told him which was which...
So he is going to start shaving them in the morning, what is sorta cool is that we have 4 matched razors all honed by the same person all stropped by the same person so these are about as equal as they can be, except the stones used, here is what he has...
Not in any order hehehe
He has a razor honed on the Shapton system 1k-2k-4k-6k-8k-16k-30k
He has a razor honed on the Naniwa system 1k-3k-5k-8k-10k-12k
He has a razor honed on Norton 1k-4k-8k then finished on an Extra Fine Coticule..
He has a razor honed on Norton 1k-4k-8k then finished on a hand picked Chinese stone..
All four razors were stropped 10 laps on a CrOx bench strop
All four razors were stropped 15 laps on a CeOx bench strop
All four razors were then stropped 50 linen and 100 leather on an Illinois #827
They were test shaved, then stropped 25 web and 50 leather on an SRD Premium 1 they were sterilized, and then oiled, wrapped and sent to Ray...
Let's see how he ranks the shaves
Disclaimer: This is by no means a strict scientific test, it doesn't prove a darn thing, it is just a ton of fun to do...Last edited by gssixgun; 05-31-2010 at 12:27 AM.

I guess I will need to use the same pre-shave prep for the next four days.
Thanks for putting the extra effort, Glen. This should be a unique opportunity.
Would also make for a very simple SOTD post for the coming 4 days.

And just so folks don't start wondering... "Why in the world would he have 4 identical razors?"... it is a 4 day set:

I'm going to say that they will all be great shavers right off of Glen's bench.
Now I'll take a wild guess and put my money on the razor that received the complete shapton treatment just for fun.
But it may just come down to whichever razor ray uses first.. last... or just thinks is the prettiest

Glen, without revealing specifics, did your test shaves give you an idea as to how you'd personally rank them?

Ray, anyone wondering why you have 4 identical Mappins has a bigger problem themselves...
