i have one and really like it. you really can't beat it for the price and you will see when you start reading some of the older threads on it that there is no reason you can't get a great edge off of it. i would really recommend reading up in the archives here as there is some really good info.

(call me captain obvious if you must) don't forget to lap it!

Cool, if I could only have one stone that would be it. Here is Lynn's pyramid guide from the SRP Wiki and here is another pyramid guide as well in case you haven't seen them.

    Congrats on your new stone!

If the 4K side feels too textured or granular you may have to do more lapping than the usual amount required to flatten the hone. There seems to be some variability in the surface quality of these stones, so I don't want to generalize, but mine needed a lot of lapping. I think that I took off about an 1/8th of an inch before the surface was what I wanted.

Also, like most hones, don't forget to relieve the long edges slightly as part of the initial lapping. I missed both of these steps the first time I used my Norton. Lynn looked at the edge through his microscope and, to his credit, managed to stifle the LOL. I think he actually said "That doesn't look like it would be too comfortable". Let's just say the edge had a few microchips and leave it at that.

I love my norton, its a great hone for razors. As mentioned, make sure to lap the 4k side so its no longer sandy feeling, should be smooth. Also make sure to lap often, the hone gets dirty and clogs up quickly since it cuts fast.

Just IME, I hone at the sink with the lapping plates in the sink ready to go. I used to lap the swarf off of my 4/8 as it built up until I read a post by someone who recommended hitting the hone with a nylon bristle brush to clean the swarf. I started doing this and it cut down on the amount of lapping I was doing substantially. This translates to less wear on the stone and on the plate. Try it, you'll like it.

isaid i would let you no how i got on with mine.As i coticule hone and very rarley use my 4k 8k.

i decided to use a progression

starting with 1k naniwa i set the bevlel. the edge was passing tnt looked fine under the loop and easily shaved a little leg hair. My norton had been soaking it was lapped and ready.

I did 20 laps. tpt felt more responsive. under the loop there were still 1k grooves mountain and valleys i call them. I did a nother 40 laps . Much better under the loop. I felt i could do more to improve the edge at 4k level. i ended up doing another 60 only light laps may be this was to many but i wanted to make sure the mountains and valleys were smoothed out, the tpt test still felt great. I finished with just 20 laps on 8k. under the loop i could vagly see any serrations the cutting edge was nice and straight and looled sharp.

stropped and i ran the razor above skin level and it was slicing arm hair. I do use the hht and it was just how i like it. I shaved of the 8k and the shave was great plenty sharp enough. Smooth ish for 8k norton, i bet once i add coticule or escher plus some kind of spray this razor will be as smooth and sharp as any one would expect.

all in all no probs and shave ready at the 8k level. this is not the first time i have used a norton i just hav'nt used it for a while . I thought i would give it a go for old time sakes. i can see why it would be a good choice for any one .
I also no for a fact many hone meisters use 4k/8k and swear by it. they do use a finisher ie coticule escher 12k naniwa and pastes etc. my advice would be to move to finisher only if you can shave of 8k if you carn't polisher or finishing hone won't make any differance.

i still have more confidents with my coticules as i no much better as i used them more often. The same would be with nortons if i used it more often .

    hope you enjoy yours
