Honing Pyramid?

I'm wanting to get into honing my own razors and have been doing some research on the process. I've seen a lot of mention about the seemingly mystical 'honing pyramid,' but have yet to find a detailed description or any examples of such pyramids. Any ideas where to find this info? Perhaps some of the skilled honers could create a sticky with instructions/examples. Thanks in advance!!

Yep the wiki is the place to go for the best explanation of this.

Don't be like the member who couldn't get his razors sharp for years because he thought the Pyramid System meant to hone under a pyramid. If he had only read the wiki he would have known.

Oh, and I almost forgot one of my more important underlying questions. Is a 5k-ish grit good for the first passes, and 8k+ grit fine (pun intended?) for finishing passes? Are 10k and 12k really that necessary? Thanks again!

First and foremost a good bevel set is essential. Depending on the condition of the bevel it may be done on a 4 or 5k but more often than not on a dull razor a 1k is more efficient as far as speed is concerned. The 5k/8k is fine for a pyramid. The higher 12k or whatever grits are nice for added smoothness but not necessary for a good shave if you've done the thing on the 8k.

Jimmy stated it well. What we really need to know is the condition of the edge your starting with. Is it an antique store/ebay/vintage razor that you have not worked on, a new razor or.......?

good point my razor is still useable for shaving, just has a small ding or two and is starting to dull. this would be primarily for touching up the edge. maybe someday i'll be adventurous enough to restore a razor...

Then start with the 5k/8k stones. Go to a coarser grit if the dings do not come out.
