    Default Slury question

I have recently received the norton sharpening kit, it has the 220/1000, 4000/8000, the laping stone and a slury stone. My question is when and how do you use the slury stone, is it on the 4000 or the 8000 stone and do I just rub it on the hone itself or on something else?

Hi have never seen norton slurry stone? May be it is new?
Never used my norton 4/8k with slurry.
I don't think someone needs any slurry on Norton. It is synthetic stone use just without slurry.gl

I have used the Norton slurry stone, it is white in color and I always used it with the stone of matching color the few times I used it, but it is really unnecessary. Play with it and have fun and see if it works for you.

The "Prep" stone or "Artificial Nagura" can be used exactly like any other slurry stone on any one of the 4 Norton stones...

On the 8k you could actually do the exact same thing as you can do with a Coticule and hone from bevel to shaving by diluting the slury...

On the 4k you can re-set a shave edge to a slightly degraded razor, then move to the 8k to polish it, skipping the full bevel set of the 1k..

On the 1k by raising a slurry you can cut a bevel so fast and easy with it you will think you were using a DMT but without the deep scratches..

For serious restoration work on the 220 the slurry helps the razor actually slide on the stone...

Although it is not much used, the Norton prep tone is a very useful stone, if you take the time to mess with it...

HOWEVER they have become quite pricy in the last few years, they used to be $7 and I used them quite often, but at $16 now I just use a small Arkansas to raise a slurry on just about any stone...

But as Sham & Kelly already said above you don't NEED one, but if you learn to use one, it is just another arrow in your quiver...

Does anyone use the "Norton Prep Stone" to refresh the 8K? It won't degrade the polish?

No, it doesn't. When I first used it I presumed it to be a chunk of 4k and thought it was stupid to put in on the 8k. It isn't like the 4k. It's kind of chalky. For the most part it just cleans off the hone and produces a refreshed surface. It does not seem to impede the use of the 8k. I suppose if you diluted it away, it would insure that you did not have any diminishment of the polish of the 8k but I've not really noticed it being a problem.
