Not Really Sure About the HHT
I'm not really sure how effective a test the HHT is, at least with the bristles from a boar brush, as some here have espoused. I have a kitchen knife I made that just passed it (with the bristles). I sure as hell don't wanna shave with it.

I agree. Natural soft human hair, the lighter and whispier the better. Some guys will tell you they can't get their hair to pass a hanging hair test. But they'll be the first to espouse all their honing knowledge. Makes ya wonder sometimes. I find a sharp razor makes a distintive drag on most strops. And once a razor is honed its hard to screw up. Maybe there is a market for my arm hair. I'll put some on Ebay and see what happens. I'll send you some if you wanna pay postage. :-)

Fine hair is the real test (for me)
I have very fine hair. I know my razors are good to go when they can go through the finest hair on the back of my hand without touching skin.
It's trade off- I need a really sharp edge but I don't stress it much.

Thanked: 2209Thats why each of us has to develop a standard to test against that suits our needs. Its just like the Pyramid system of honing. It is not the absolute best, it is simply a method, one of many, that a person can use to get to their goal.

For me if it passes the HHT with boar bristles it gives me a good shave. My facial hair and the boar bristles are similar. You have to figure out what works for you. However remember the ultimate test is the shave, if it passes that test it is good enough.

The HHT does not always work for me even though I do get great shaves from my razors (my hair is very fine). I use the armhair test and the thumb test as well. Use the actual shave as the ultimate test.

For me the armhair test and the amount of drag on the strop will tell me what I need to know. The thumbnail test where you let the razor slide off your thumbnail is really doing the same thing as when you strop as far as producing drag just that its drawing on your thumbnail instead of the strop.

The only test I use is shaving. With my diabetes, the thumb test is useless, and I've never had a razor pass the HHT test. However, I start shaving and use that as my feedback. One cheek is all it takes.

Randy is right. The only reason the other test exist is because everyone wanted a perfect edge to shave with right away. I can't swear to it but I believe each razor is different and I bet on some razors you might get a great shave but never pass the HHT.
