Thanked: 1"feel" of the 8k norton
I am used to honing knives with oil stones and with those you feel as if the hone is very solid( like a piece of granite) and the blade moves slickly over the hone.
with the 8k norton the drag on the blade is almost rubbery, it feels like trying to drag something across a rubber truck bed liner. I try to use a light touch but the drag created by the hone makes me increase the force needed to move the balde across the hone.

Resist that temptation. It will only cause you to oversmooth the work you just did on the 4k. If you lap your hon at any point (and I just did mine for the first time in ever after 8 months) that will diminish a very little.

You can try soaking only the white side of the norton, and before using the yellow, just add a little splash of water, and repeat when needed. I found that soaking the 8K side for 10-15 minutes makes it rubbery in feel...

Thanked: 4942I leave my Norton 4k/8K's sitting in water all the time as they are used on an almost daily basis. The key for me on the 8K is to maintain a thin shield of water, a consistent X pattern stroke and a very light touch. I do use my pumice stone to get the build up off from time to time.
