What have you honed recently?

Jr is with is for the first part of his summer vacation and we decided to spend a day at the US side of Niagara Falls, no razor stuff. Wouldn't ya know we passed an estate sale! Had to stop in. Well, at the start of the day we didn't have any new razors to buff, grind or hone. By the end of the day we did. We also hit an antique shop here and there as we passed them, some yard sales too. I thought I had this RAD under control.

By the time we headed home we had 21 razors priced between $2 and $10, one for $15 and one for $18. Between this past Thursday and Sunday we put all but three back into service. Some were just Massed, some buffed, some on the greaseless and one had a scale swap from a razor with a major chip which is not listed here. I have a group pic of the first batch that were just Massed and honed. Of the group two were previous purchases that needed to be cleaned up after we inspected the rotation last month and re-honed. Jr took individual pics of the razors after honing so if you would like to see any in particular just ask. Also included is a short vid (if the link works) of 100+ laps on a coti in 1 min 38 seconds. I don't do well when I'm trying to prove something so bare with it.

THe razors pictured are Peters Brothers, WK & C Peace, Johnathan Crooks, Mappin and Webb, Geo. Korn Fit-U, Worchester, Heljistrand, WH Morley and Sons Clover Brand, Wade and Butcher, Craftsman, Wade and Butcher "Blank for Concave".

All razors noted above were honed between this past Thursday and Sunday morning. The hones pictured are Nortons from 1 k to 8k (of a 3-8 combo w/ 8k side down) Naniwa Chosera 1k, Naniwa Super Stone in 5k and 8k, Coti, Escher and C12k.

Another item to add to my list of things you have that I want - video camera.

That is one heck of a hit list of razors! As always, thanks for sharing.

I honed two of my razors in my last batch of honing - a little Cmon Quarter hollow and a chrome plated (at least I'm pretty sure it's chrome plated) Geneva. My progression was DMT1.2k, Naniwa SS 5k, Naniwa SS 8k (and as I've been doing recently, no "finisher").

I honed my grelot this morning after my shave.

It was tugging just a bit so I did about 50 passes on the coti. The heel was sharp but the toe was just lacking a bit.

Is this normal for one part to be sharper than the other? I do tend to shave more with the toe than any other part of the blade.

yes it is normal intill you learn how to hone that blade properly
i have blades i can hone right and those i dont

Holy moly Captain Marvel !! Joe I don't even strop that fast let alone hone.

I take my hat off to you. You also have me beat with RAD. Heckuva haul and all look to be good ones but I guess that is a given or they wouldn't be there. My last honing was a few days ago messing with a Robert Williams that I got long ago. Needed some attention. Before that a couple of Charlie Lewis's framebacks that I have been fooling with. Slow but I'll get there eventually.

Last one I did was a Sta-Sharp that needed a chip removed from the edge. It also had some funky previous hone wear.

I use a DMT 325 for work like this. Might be overkill, but I keep a light touch. Taped spine, more because I didn't want to make the hone wear worse while using the DMT.

My normal practice is a Shapton progression of 2000, 4000, 8000, and 16,000. But as I have read that Sta-Sharps might be prone to micro-chipping I used a vintage Thuringian to finish.

The last one was a coin shop find, a Torrey 6/8.

Honed on a DC4 25u diamond side followed by the ceramic side, then a Thuringian, and finished on newspaper.

I picked up a razor for 10.00 at an antique shop last month called a NEV-A-HONE, and it hit the 1k 5k 8k 12k naniwas last night, the test shave was sharp but not so smooth. SO i said to myself this one needs the same treatment as my Wacker, 100 laps on some newspaper!! that did the trick and now shes in the ROTATION.

Cleaned up and honed an antique store find today, a "Pearl", thats all it said, right in the middle of the blade.

Very nice snatch there...that's what I call a vacation/time off well spent

My latest hone was with my 5/8 Respecto #77. It was starting to pull & tug a bit...Instead of my Naniwas, I pulled out my recently acquired natural 8x2.5 BBW/Yellow coticule (which I had not used yet) and started putting metal to stone. Boy...I tell you, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of this stone...In <10 minutes, I had refreshed the edge, using the unicot method. It passed the TPT. I then took the razor for 30 laps around my Naniwa 12K, 5 laps with CrOx and 40 laps on Premium IV strop (SRD).

Shaved the next AM (Monday)...smooth as butter. I was happy: first time on the coticule with slurry and dilution and viola...I had an edge worthy of a shave.

I love this hobby
