cutting up a 3x8 norton 4/8 k waterstone
I'm considering "making" a portable norton 4/8k. I've got this well used stone that I'm working up the courage to flatten out the 4k side on. With the amount I may have to travel for work this summer I think it would behoove me to have something along the ride for sharpening, etc.
I'm thinkin of slicing off about 1/3 of the 3x8 4/8 k with either a band saw or a backwards blade on a table saw. I need a portable size.
I've already got a sealed rubberized poly box to put it in and put the water in. I've also made a nylon strap set to put around the box to ensure the seal doesn't break.
Sound Like I'm on the right track or just stupid? Any suggestions?

Do a search in the forums, Kelly did the exact thing on his Norton couple of months ago, and he was pleased...

I've got a 2x4" jap 4/8k setup and it works just fine for my regular honing. When you make your cuts, live yourself a couple of milimeters of extra space so you can fix up the edges.

I was toying with this idea myself. I wanted a 2 x4 stone like a barber hone but made from a 4K/8K Norton.
Maybe a tile contractor would run it through his diamond blade tile saw for a few $$
