    Default Help with honing.

I have a collection of Gotta Superfine 120's and I can get them to POP a hair on the HHT but not "melt" it like I can with some of my other blades.
I'm using Naniwa 1k, 5k, 8k and 12k. Set bevel and shave arm hair at 1k. 4k/8/ pyramid from 20 laps down then on to the 12k before stropping on SRP Premium III.
    Any suggestions would greatly appreciated.

Rather than focussing on getting tests to perform, the real question is what are the shaves like?

If you get a smooth, close and comfortable shave then dont worry about how the razor performs on an arm hair test or any of the other tests. Its all about the shave after all..!

    What he said.

Comfy shaves are what it's all about. I just touched up a blade last night and just for grins tested it doing HHT and it didn't pass at all. However the edge looked and felt sharp and smooth so I shaved with it this morning and it was great. Shaving is the only test that counts.

    sboness,

+1 on what others have said; it is the shave that counts.

As I have a 'high & tight' haircut, the only suitable hair I have for the HHT is my wifes very, very fine hair. No DE razor blade has ever passed the HHT with her hair, and very few of my straights.

However, all my straights shave beautifully. Don't get hung up over the HHT !!

    Have fun !

    Best regards

If the Gotta's don't shave as well as the others after the same honing routine, maybe they have slightly harder steel. Maybe a few more strokes on the 8 and 12K would bring them up to the level of the others.

Gotto's are great razor. i have never had any problem with them.
The only thing could say is this.
    1 your experience with honing
2 have you clean this blade with dremel etc? thinking of changing temper of the blade.
    hope this helps

If you can shave arm hair after the 1K I think you are doing a great job. Shave test is what counts, all the other tests are surrogates for the real thing.

The only thing I might add would be that if you have a good bevel set, then start your pyramid at either 10 or 15, work through it and then 10 on the 12K followed by 10 light on either a paste or spray and then 60 on the strop and you should be there.

If I'm comfy with the bevel set, then normally I don't test until the shave.

    Have fun,

Thanks for all the feedback and advice.
I will give it a "crack" and see how I go.

    Cheers
