How Often
I know this will all depend on use of the SR among other variables but how often is generally recommended to touch up the blade by honing?

What Sham said 100%.
Generaly as soon as you feel shave is not as good as it was. Don't wait too long after that because you force the blade, it will deteriorate faster and it will need more than touch up.

Thanks guys I was guessing it would probaly be 3-4 months all things concidered. So what would be a good stone? I've noticed a stone like norton 4k-8k seems to be popular with a stone for building a slurry.

For basic touch up of a razor a barbers hone is used or u could use a balsa strop with CrOx on it, also a 12k stone would work as well.

The Norton 4-8k combo is an excellent stone to have and enter the world of honing with. You will want something to keep it flat and fresh like a 325 DMT 8" continous surface plate.
The slurry stone is not needed, but can have a place in your honing if you want to experiment later on. Also you will want to get a finishing system like CrO on leather or balsa.
A good quality leather strop to finish and maintain and you have every stone you will ever need.
This of course is contingent that you do not become infected with HAD.

Thanked: 124+1. In the past I have tried to save hone wear by keeping an edge alive with a pasted hard paddle. When I did finally have to go back to the hone, I had to do a lot more honing than I would have had I just used the hone for touch-ups, so I didn't really save anything. Now I touch up 5 laps or so on the Swaty, followed by finishing on the hard paddle. I have to do this every 5 shaves or so, but I have an extreme case of barbed wire beard, soft razors, and 3-pass shaves. Most people don't have to touch up nearly this often.
