Thanked: 198when to remover a layer of tape
i have a question, may have already been covered, but i dont know for sure. when reseting a bevel, i start with 3 layers of tape, then move to 2 and so forth. what i need to know is when, or what am i looking for as indicators as to when to remove a layer of tape. is there a ceratin sound or feel to the razor as a sign as to when i should remove a layer and keep honing on the 1k to set the bevel. I was honing a c-mon last night, and i think i got it right, it shaved wonderfully, but i found myself wondering if i have hit the line with the 3 layers, and needed to move down to 2 layers and so forth. then i ran into a second situation which seemed to work itself out i hope.

I would think you'd remove a layer of tape once you have the bevel set with the tape you start with.
Just out of curiosity, why are you dropping layers like that? When I use tape, I use either 1 or 2 layers and stick with it all the way through.

Thanked: 198I had to breadknife the razor on 400grit sandpaper, it had a slight frown that was across the middle, it straightned the edge up nicely. i then went about to reset the bevel. i might have misunderstood earlier posts from other threads, but i was under the impression that when you reset a bevel, you started with three layers or 2 whichever, and work you way down to none. that is why i am removeing tape.

I use 1 layer of tape on everything except wedges, the hand forging and grinding on these beasts makes them somewhat irregular, these I use 3-4 layers as needed.

Thanked: 13245Once it is straight and even then,,,
Try intermixing circles and x strokes to keep it even get it to pass a TNT and move on, when you get down to 1 or none (your choice) then revert to normal bevel setting rules...
Remember if you are using that technique you are only cutting a "Pre" bevel coming off an essentially square edge,,
There is a really easy way to do this but me typing it will make no sense, perhaps it is time for me to actually try a youtube video on honing...
If you look at the Colorado Meet up thread you will see some pics, essentially it is a knife style honing technique to cut a fast pre-bevel using Japanese (back-n-forth) strokes...Last edited by gssixgun; 09-01-2010 at 09:04 PM.
