    Put some marker on the edge and let it dry. Do a few strokes on your hone and see what is being removed. You may have to alter your x stroke and the angle of approach to hit the edge from heel to point. The circles Lynn suggests will help create a symbiotic relationship between the spine and the edge. Here is a video with Lynn demonstrating the technique.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
