Thanked: 3795Well, I'm only 4 hours west of Chicago.
I don't know of any honing shop in the Chicago area, but I would like to warn you that if you do take it somewhere that claims to do razor honing, ask the following two questions directly of the person who will do the honing:
1. Do YOU personally shave with a straight razor?
2. Do you use flat hones or grinding wheels to do the sharpening?
If the answer to question 1 is "no," just walk away.
If the answer to question 2 is "grinding wheels," slap him, and then run away.

I am up in Milwaukee and there isnt much up here to help you with. Your best bet is to PM one of the members and see how fast they can get them back to you.
I sent some off to Bob Keyes and turnaround is very quick and a great person to deal with. (615-826-0174)

You can call him to see how fast he can turn them around. I think you can have them back by the weekend.

You can most likely get some honing done at Gonzo's this Saturday.
If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

Great point. See the thread on the Chicagoland get-together at Gonzo's. Utopian is a master honer and plans to attend. (I'll be there also, in my essential capacity as soft-drink and chips bringer.)
Keep your pivot dry!

I do believe merz does honing. Don't know turn around time though.
I am very appreciative of all the knowledge and sharing each and everyone has provided me with. Look forward to future endeavors with many of you.

Thanked: 3After watching, listening and participating I will attest that Utopian is a very competent honer/ restorer! I was very impressed, to say the least with Ron's knowledge and ability to not only explain but demonstrate the problems you might encounter and how to correct them. I left the meet today much, much more confident after learning how to identify potential problems. Not only how to ID them but the ability to see them and what to look for, and how to correct them. What a great help he was! I give him a 5 stars for not only being patient with many of my newbe questions but also being patient enough to thoroughly explain every aspect of what I might be missing within the question I was asking. Wow what a patient and knowledgeable teacher. All in all he just helped me in my new found interest in this hobby. I can not for the opportunity to participate in another meet up. And I hope it's sooner than later. Thanks Utopian!

I've never seen or heard of a shop that hones razors in the city. Is there a reason you don't want to mail it to one of the professional honers from this site?
