i have this Charnley Forest Hone its been used with oil can anyone tell me the best way to use it as a finishing stone?
do i lap it then use oil which oil or do i use water thanks jimmy

Jimmy, photos will help.
Personally, I think CF hones work best with water or maybe water with a little bit of dishwashing detergent (if you need to break up water beads from previous oil use).
Give the stone a good lapping and just use water from now on. CFs don't seem to be very porous, so I would think that with lapping all traces of past oil use will be gone.

I've not had much time to play with the CF's, but when I have, I found they worked better with oil than water.
I would suggest checking the hone's flatness by putting on a pencil grid and giving it a quick lap.

CF the best way to use is with oil.
there is only 1 oil is absolutely contraindicated to use with Charly.
it sounds like linsing oil (i don't know how to spell etc. if you check srp i am sure you will find exact name etc.)
