    Default QUESTION ON PUMA

I have a puma that shaves arm hair and passes the HHT,however,it doesn't give a really smooth shave.Ive given it about 15 laps on a carborundum pasted silk strop and about 30 on clean silk, then 70 on leather.
Its not a bad shave ,but something is missing.I'm not familiar with Pumas, and this was a gift. Can anyone help??

The carborundum is silicone oxide, its from a very old box and that's what they called it back then,or so I'm told.I have a set of Nortons,325,1000,4000,8000.and a BBW&coticul bout.the pasted strop is just s silk strop with this stuff on it,the directions had me heat it up slightly and rub it on .I used the x patteren, and it works pretty well on everything Ive tried so far.So what now??

The old Puma razors were second to none IME. Is this a vintage razor or of recent production ?

ok go back to 8k and stay on it until you pass this test. your arm hairs will fall of as soon as blade touches them.
please note i did not say they- hairs will jump as soon as blade touches them. if they do then your blade is not sharp enough to move next step .
now your strokes should be only wait of the blade.
numbers doesn't matter as long as you are not too aggressive by putting pressure to the blade.
when you got hairs fall off --( see below first)move to coticule( lets pray it is fine coticule and you can use to put final edge to the stone.)
make 50 with slurry and 50 without slurry.
    strop and shave test .
I would say will better if you shave test after 8k and see where are you at in sharpness then coticule 50/50 and shave test.
if your coticule shave test is worse then Norton 8k say good buy (or use it as a lower grit stone not as finisher)to your coticule.
    hope this helps.

From the photos it looks like a vintage blade to me ..... IOW, a good one. If you feel competent to handle what Sham (hi_bud_gl) suggests do so. If not maybe send it to a honemeister. Sham is one of 'em.
