    Default Another Norton 4k/8k thread

Is the norton followed by a stropping with a hanging strop enough to get an edge that is shave ready? Is it necessary to go beyond and use a coticule or pasted paddle strop?

Just as an fyi, the Norton 4k/8k is on sale for $59 ($69 after shipping) at hartvilletool until May 31st (props to FUD who mentioned it in this thread).

I think I'm going to get one now since it's a good deal and I , but I'd like to know if with this alone and a strop I will be able to shave.

    Thanks

    -Kyle

It's not NECESSARY, but I'm with Rich and especially since you're new to honing, it's likely that your shave will be even better with just a little more refining after the Norton. 0.5 µ paste, ultra fine barber hone, 12k stone, Belgian coticule ... it's up to you. I've got all four right now and I'm trying to decide which I like best.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll pick another tool up in the future when I can afford it:P For now it's good to know I'll be able to get by with the Norton every so often.

I think over time you will find different razor respond to different tools. Some will be great going from Norton to hanging strop. Other may need a pasted strop after, some a Coticule or Escher. Some will do better with other pastes than Amplex diamond too, chromium oxide, boron, etc.....

it probably depends on your beard and the razor. I can get it to pass the HHT on the norton and then use a hanging strop and get a nice shave on some parts of my face. Other areas where the hairs are larger and thicker it is not so nice. Finishing the razor with a paddle strop makes a huge difference.
Of course if you are a real honemeister maybe you could get it that sharp with the norton

my advice is to work with the norton and shave untill it starts gettign comfortable.

For me, it's enough. I get nice shaves using just the Norton 4/8K stone. I haven't tryed pastes, though...
