Thread: SUN TIGER water stone?? Is it good??? Please help me!!!!

I'm watching an Ebay auction for 3 Sun Tiger Deluxe Water Slip Stones(grits are 1000, 4000 and 8000), and I would like to know from a honemeister if it is good enough for a straight razor!!!!

Of course the 1000 grit stone isn't good, but about 4000 and 8000 stones?????

I have a 6000 Sun Tiger jap waterstone and it's very nice indeed. so the 1000, 4000, 8000 set would be a good buy. A little small in length though but then again so are Belgium coticules etc..

I got some japs that were advertised as sun tiger waterstones but they definately have made in japan stickers and were bought from a reputable woodworking business. They're about 2x4", wedge-shaped, but you get a rectangular shape if you place one on top of the other. That's how you get your flat working surface. They were good enough to get my blades shave ready and get me used to working with a very small coticule that just arrived this morning.

One word of warning: They won't get your blade as sharp as a Norton would, so chances are it will still get snagged when going against the grain in some denser growth areas. You have to adjust your shaving technique and go slowly, carefully and with tiny strokes.
A tip: use the 1k to lap the 4/8k and place the 4k and 8k on top of each other with the fat side of the bottom stone towards you. Give the contact surfaces a quick wipe. That will stop them from sliding.

Quick analysis: They will get your razors to shave and a great bang for the buck. Once you have extra cash, get a coticule to refine your edge. Be careful with your against the grain passes. The 1k is for lapping and for really dull edges.
