    Default the "frown"

Ok, so the other day I noticed that a few of the (cheap) razors that I acquired have a slight frown. So that there's more honed away near the center of the edge than on the sides.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to at least turn this "frown" into a neutral face?

Check the 1961 Barbers manual in the archives. Its layed out step by step. Essentially place both fingers on top of the curved in area and apply slight pressure, if I remember it correctly.

Wow, that sounds wrong. Do circles on a lower grit hone applying SOME pressure over the DISTENDED parts. Tape the spine while you do.

Depending on the magnitude of the frown, regular honing might take a while. Remember you need to hone away enough of the toe and heel edge to turn it into a smile.

You can just hone those parts directly on edge and then re-establish a bevel. Use a rolling motion to get a nice smile. If memory serves correctly, Bill Ellis showed this in his video where he is using his Burr King to do the job.

Just don't do this on your regular hone because it will groove the hell out of the surface. If I need to hone the edge (dulling or getting major nicks out, frown correction) I do it on the edge of the hone where the grooving does not really matter except for aesthetics.
