    Default Finish with newspaper?

Okay, I just watched a video on YouTube and after honing on a stone the razor was "honed/stropped" on a couple layers of newspaper on the flat stone. He claims there is no need for stropping by doing this. Anyone else see this video or should I start drinking again??

    Cool

Newspaper and some of the inks are mild abrasives and will put a wicked finish on an edge,,,

I wouldn't be trading in any of my leather strops for it, but it does work... rub a #2 pencil lead all over it for even more fun...

+1 on the above. I would not use newsprint as a replacement for stropping, but newspaper does seem to make a real difference after hones. I love anything cheap, but I almost wrote off newspaper because, well, so easy. Playing around with it, I have found that if you are willing to do 150+ laps, it does indeed put a niiiiiiiiiiiice smooth finish after honing.

Newspapers can work, but there is not a lot of consistency when using at the end of a honing regiment. From a stropping standpoint........I'm sticking with leather.

    Have fun,

You find a heavily blackened part of the newpaper, like a dark photograph B&W and strop on that by wrapped the newpaper around a hone or another bench strop. Like Glenn mentioned you can rub lead pencil on the newspaper to darken it and add some "draw".

It's fun and it does work, but strops are more consistent since ink levels will vary on pieces of newspaper.

Dry like when you buy it in the store.

You should dry yourself completely before stropping. And put on a robe.
Don't get hung up on hanging hairs.

I've used newspapers on the edge of the kitchen counter for stropping. It seems to work, but as Lynn says: it's not very consistent. In a pinch it can be used, but you're best off getting yourself a real strop.

There are some pretty reasonably priced strops available.

The newspapers did seem to be mildly abrasive and they seemed to smooth out edges a bit.
