Thanked: 40I'm relatively new to honing and have also only a handful under my belt however I make the jump from a norton 8k to a shapton 16k with no problems at all ^_^
but as long as that edge is shave ready off the 8k I have no problems finishing wether it be on the 16k or a barber hone IMLE (in my limited experience)

Thanked: 3795You will find that some "experts" are simply regurgitating what they read a short time ago and have little, if any, real experience. Some have the best of intentions but are simply clueless. Some have dollar signs in their eyes and are just trying to quickly establish themselves as experts so that they can claim honemeister status within three months of touching their first straight. Of course some simply have an alternative point of view about how this stuff works and should in no way be vilified for having an opinion out of the norm.
I have no idea where your guy falls within that spectrum.

Thanked: 49421. Unfortunately, there are a couple of forums that try to discredit the great information from over here when their actual experience is limited. In my opinion, most are simply seeking recognition or some bidness. This is a shame and is very confusing for new people. So my recommendation is not to go to those forums...............
The best straight razor information is here any way!!!
2. I probably hone more razors than most and I routinely go from a Norton 8K or Shapton 8K or Naniwa SS 8K to either a Naniwa SS 12K, Shapton 16K or one of my naturals like my Escher or Asagi. I normally do 10 X strokes on water only followed by 10 X strokes on .5 diamond spray on felt followed by a regular stropping.
3. Most importantly, Have Fun and Happy New Year!!

Thanked: 62Thanks Lynn,
I was sure the info was wrong but as a noob I figured I better come over here and ask the question before I posted. I just went back over there and entered a post with the info that you good people gave me. Hopefully it will help out some new guy who's head is spinning with all of the info being thrown around out there.

Thanked: 13249I would just like to take this opportunity to point out one small little factoid...
The name of this forum is "Straight Razor Place" we deal with straight razors and what it takes to keep them up and running and shaving with them... We have the best membership, and the most knowledgeable experts at this... Oh sure we do have a DE section tobut really we are all about straight razors..
We don't just talk about just one stone here, (Coticule be) we don't really discuss what body wash we use (B&B) We are not a tiny little enclave of mostly banned former members of SRP, (2 nameless forums) or a general shaving forum (TSD)
We are Straight Razor Place and damn proud of it !!!!
Happy New Year

Thanked: 1195Hmmm, can't say where the OP's info came from, but I've found the Naniwa 12k to have good cutting ability for a 12k stone. I don't think I've had to use more than 20 laps, usually less.
100's of laps needed? I don't think so.
