Thanked: 62Norton Prep Stone
Can the Norton Prep Stone be used on the Naniwa 12k
SS? Wanted to try Glens finishing method on the Naniwa and my DMT D8c is a little clumsy to use for me plus it gets a bit sticky.

Thanked: 1263By prep stone do you mean the large flattening stone or the small slurry type stone?

If , as carentshaving inquired, you are talking of a Norton flattening stone, then yes. I use my Norton flattening stone with fine results on a Naniwa 12000. Tell me about this finishing technique????

Thanked: 13245Hmmmm those Prep Stones or Artificial Naguras are much better for creating a cutting slurry, as they release their own grit...
For a finishing slurry you really want that DMT you have, yes they do get a bit sticky on the 10K and 12k Naniwa's... I would invest $16.95 into a extra stone holder for it, rather than the $13.95 for a Norton Prep stone... The stone holder will make it easier to handle and last forever...
Another alternative is a small low quality Arkansas stone, they have them as knife sharpeners at many sporting goods stores,, they release very little grit and raise a nice slurry...Last edited by gssixgun; 01-16-2011 at 01:17 PM.

I just use a DMT 325 grit to make slurry on my stones, it's way more versatile since you can use it on any stone and the stone will make it's natural slurry in that grit for you whereas the Norton Prep stone will always release the same slurry which is like the 4K side of the Norton.

Thanked: 62I figured as much. The holder for the DMT is a great idea. That wi be my next purchase. That DMT is a seriously useful piece of equipment! If you don't have one you are missing out.

Thanked: 13245It lifts it up off the table when honing, and it gives you something more substantial to hang onto while using it with the DMT for lapping...
Tis mo-better
